“I have been a DJ in the Tango scene for more than three years, about half of his Tango life. He began his DJ journey due to his love of Tango music and believes it has been instrumental in developing musicality in his dance. He regularly DJ’s at various Milongas in Perth and on occasion overseas. He believes taking Dancers on a journey and exposing them to a variety of Tango music so that they may experience and gain a range of musical and dance appreciation in Traditional, Nuevo and Contemporary Tango. Other than Di Sarli, Nick’s favourite artists include Anibal Troilo, Miguel Calo, Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla.”

Maestro Bandoneónist Joaquín Amenábar will return to Perth on Friday 26th September to Sunday 28th September for a series of inspiring and information-packed workshops culminating in his exquisite performance at our Gala Milonga on Saturday 27th September 2014.

Over the past year, Mi Serenata Tango has been asked repeatedly whether we will be hosting Joaquín again in the near future. Hence, we were very delighted when Joaquín offered to visit Perth again for a further series of workshops while on his way to Tasmania! How lucky were we!

We are undoubtely very honoured and proud to host this world renown Maestro for the second time in a year. Joaquín really does not require any introduction from us. read his biography and permit him to speak for himself.

Joaquin touched all of our souls last year with his style of teaching, his knowledge on musicality, dancing to the orchestras and of course his intermittent playing of the bandoneon at workshops whenever he needed to illustrate a point.

We had tremendous participation in the workshops last year so much so that we had to find a bigger value at the eleventh hour!

DJ Helen Schairer Bio

My initial encounter with tango was in 1996 when I travelled to Buenos Aires for the first time. Like most of us I was captivated and wanted more. That was the beginning of an 18 year love affair with the dance, the language, the people and the culture of Argentina and Latin America as a whole.

In Perth I initially taught tango with Gaston Valdes who was one of the first Argentine émigrés to disseminate his tango passion in Perth in the late 1990’s. Later I joined up with a group of his more enthusiastic students which included Kiong and Kyoko. We started to dance and promote tango along with other Latin rhythms in some local cafés around Perth. The ‘ASTORIA CAFÉ’ which was situated on Claremont’s high street is still affectionately remembered today by former patrons for its colourful contribution to the early beginnings of Perth’s Latin dance scene.

I have continued to visit the traditional tango dance halls of Buenos Aires on a regular basis over the past 18 years which has helped me to stay in touch with contemporary tango developments. As a visitor, I’ve been privileged to have experienced the defiant renaissance of tango which started to rise up in the late 80’s after its longtime suppression by the past military dictatorships. Thereafter it slowly came to bloom, develop, evolve and reinstate itself as Argentina’s proudest national dance which is danced all over the world. The embracing energy of new, younger generations of dancers, teachers and musicians has also become the greatest contributing factor which keeps the dance alive and ever-evolving.

When I get to DJ in Perth my aim is to create the most authentic dance experience possible, similar to how the traditional milongas are run in the country of tango’s origin. I’ve been in a lot of dance salons in BA over the years so I am able to draw on my experiences after having studied the flow of the music sequences set for night by the local tango DJ’s of different venues. I got to know which composers are most popular and revered but also what music should not be played in a milonga! I like to believe that my style of DJing would emulate any typical milonga of the city Buenos Aires.

Mi Serenata is very proud to welcome Helene back again as our DJ for our upcoming Milonga.

Natalia Hils Biography

Natalia Hills was one of the original members of the Broadway and London hit ” Forever Tango” nominated in 1998 for both: Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Choreography. 

Born in Buenos Aires, she began her theatrical career at the age of 12 and through the years appeared in, directed and choreographed many spectacular events, concerts including but in no way an extensive list

• NBC Universal (Telemundo) and National Geographic
• PBS series “Evening at Pops” with the Boston Pops Orchestra with Leslie Caron as hostess
• appearances on television at the “Today Show” on NBC
• Principal dancer with the Los Angeles Philharmonic & special guest artist at the Hollywood Kodak Theatre (home of the Academy Awards) 
• A special guest artist at the Symphony Space, in New York City when the dance critic Alastair Macaulay at the New York Times published: “To be more specific, Ms Hills is a completely appealing and stylish dancer, delightful at a brisk tempo,….sensuous at any pace”

• In 1995, she was specifically invited to perform in honor of Princess Diana at the British Embassy in Argentina!
• Worked with director and choreographer, Damian Woetzel, at theInternational Festival of Dance in Vail, Colorado, together with the world greatest tap dancer Savon Glover, American Ballet Theater super stars: Ethan Stiefel and Gillian Murphy amoung the nation’s foremost dance companies.
• In May-2012, Natalia performed with Tangueros del Sur for its frist time in Middle East

Honours
January 2012: “Romper El Piso” - TANGUEROSDELSUR, by adjudge is declared by Argentina´s Secretary of the Nation Cultural Ministry, of CULTURAL INTEREST.
August 2012: “BAILA” the history of Argentine Tango, by adjudge is declared by Argentina´s Senate of the Nation of CULTURAL INTEREST, due to its educational content. This innovative pedagogical program is based on her own experience.

Alejandro Aquino Biography

Alejandro Aquino is a renowned dancer, director and choreographer

• In 1985 he was a featured dancer at Teatro Alvear, together with principal dancers of the Teatro Colon

• In 1989 Alejandro Aquino was chosen by Maestro Osvaldo Pugliese, composer, orchestra
  leader and one of the most important figures in the history of tango music, to join the
  Orquesta Osvaldo Pugliese on tour in America, Asia and Europe. Among these was
  the historic concert of Osvaldo Pugliese and Astor Piazzolla at the Royal Carre
  Theatre in Amsterdam, Holland on June 26 1989.
• In 1991 Alejandro performed in the famous Aldwych West End Theater in Londonwith the legendary company “Tango Argentino” of Claudio Segovia and Hector **
  Orezzolli.** 
• In 1992 he created his first complete work – “Tangueros” with the sponsorship of the
  Festival Internacional: “Oriente- Ocidente” of Treno and Roverto in Italy.
• In the years to follow, Alejandro was a guest dancer with other prestigious orchestras
  in Buenos Aires.
• In 1994 Alejandro Aguino was nominated Corresponsal Academico de la Academia
  Nacional de Tango, by the poet Horacio Ferrer.
• From 1997 – 2011 Alejandro establishes himself in Italy and dedicates himself to teaching and to transmitting his knowledge of Tango in all of Europe. 
• In 2003 creates and produces the show “Homenage a Osvlado Pugliese” with the
  Orgquesta Color Tango led by Roberto Alvarez, and presented personally by Lidia
  Pugliese. The show subsequently toured in Italy.

Honours

In 1994 Alejandro Aguino was nominated Corresponsal Academico de la Academia Nacional de Tango, by the poet Horacio Ferrer.

I can vouch that the London stage show was simply spectacular, having been in the audience myself. It inspired my love for tango all those years ago. (Sabrina Elias)
